Silicon Carbide- SiC

Silicon carbide is one of the hardest materials available and has therefore very good wear resistant characteristics. Besides the hardness the material is also suitable for high temperature applications. It is able to keep its mechanical strength in high temperatures and is has very good thermal shock characteristics.

Use our material selection tool to select the best material for your application!

Selecting the right type of silicon carbide for your application can be crucial to create a successful application. Larger parts with complex design are often made out RSiC or SiSiC, while smaller parts with tight tolerances generally made out of SSiC. Because of the hardness, it is very difficult to grind the parts towards the right dimensions. We can support in selecting the right material and optimise your design to make sure you get the best product with the best possible conditions.

Silicon carbide

The extreme hardness of the material makes it suitable for most abbrasive conditions.

Key characteristics
  • High hardness and wear resistance
  • Heat resistance
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • High thermal conductivity
  • High strength
Applications
  • Mechanical seals for pumps
  • Burner nozzles
  • Kiln furniture
  • Slide bearings
  • Wear parts
In most cases, SSiC is used for pump bearings. This is a non-porous material with excellent wear characteristics. After the forming (pressed) and sintering process, the bearing can be grinded to tight tolerances and very smooth surfaces
Silicon carbide is composed of tetrahedra of carbon and silicon atoms with strong bonds in the crystal lattice. This produces a very hard and strong material.
In general, the costs for SiC are a lot higher than for white ceramics (alumina and zirconia). Especially when used for precision parts, as it is very hard to grind the material to the right dimensions, and there is a high risk of cracking and chipping.
