Ceramic welding pins are used in the automotive industry to position parts for projection and resistance welding. These pins need to be electrically insulated and thermal shock resistant. Silicon nitride and zirconium oxide are the most common materials for this application.
In most cases, silicon nitride is the preferred material. It has excellent mechanical, thermal and chemical properties. This makes the material extremely suitable for metal-forming applications. In situations where greater toughness is required, for cases with severe impact, zirconium oxide might be the better option. Zirconium oxide also has a lower thermal conductivity and similar expansion coefficient as metals.
